Creativity Sparks During National Assisted Living Week

“A Spark of Creativity” is the theme for this year’s National Assisted Living Week (NALW), which is celebrated September 8th-14th, 2019. This annual weekly observance was established by the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) in 1995. It offers an opportunity for everyone to learn about senior living communities and everything they have to offer, including healthcare, personal enrichment, safety, and more.

Each year, NCAL chooses a special theme for National Assisted Living Week. Each theme encourages the celebration of senior living residents and the role assisted living communities play in caring for America’s aging population. NALW also presents a great opportunity to thank caregivers and staff members for their dedication and compassion when caring for or assisting residents of senior living communities.

This year’s theme, “A Spark of Creativity” encourages everyone to add some creativity to their lives and the lives of residents of assisted living communities. “[The theme] encourages everyone to get their creative juices flowing—whether it’s residents trying out new things, or caregivers exploring innovative ways to improve care and community life,” said Scott Tittle, Executive Director of NCAL.

Examples of ways you can spark some creativity and celebrate this year’s NALW include:

  • Joining residents in a painting or pottery class, like the ones offered at Grand Oaks of Jensen Beach during Assisted Living Week! Be sure to check our September Calendar for dates and times!
  • Taking your senior loved one to a local art exhibit, poetry reading, or musical concert
  • Setting creative goals with a resident, like finishing a novel or learning how to crochet

No matter what you choose, NCAL and Grand Oaks of Jensen Beach encourage you to partner with assisted living residents this month and participate in activities that celebrate creativity in fun, inspiring ways.

If National Assisted Living Week inspires you to spend more time with our assisted living or memory care residents, please feel free to inquire about our volunteer opportunities. Volunteering at an assisted living community can help you form valuable friendships, lower stress levels, and increase your self-confidence!
